History of the United States
5th Grade History of the United States explores U.S. history, geography, economics, and government through the lens of how physical and cultural characteristics have shaped the nation’s origins, growth, and development.
Topics include Indigenous cultures, European exploration, colonization, and settlement, the American Revolution, the founding of the Republic, the early years of the United States, the Civil War, and major events of the 20th century.
Students also examine citizenship and the foundational principles of government outlined in the U.S. Constitution. Throughout the course, they build critical thinking and independent study skills by questioning, analyzing facts and opinions, evaluating sources, and comparing primary and secondary materials. Lessons integrate additional social studies skills such as interpreting maps, charts, and graphs, identifying relationships, engaging in debate, writing persuasively, and conducting research using a variety of resources.
Recommended course for students in Alabama, North Carolina, Texas, and Utah.
