8th Grade Language Arts engages students in literary analysis and close reading of short stories, poetry, drama, novels, and informational texts. The course emphasizes interpreting literature, analyzing informational texts, and developing oral and written communication skills using standard (formal) English. Students learn to read "between the lines" to understand deeper meanings and explore how the culture in which a work was created influences its themes and ideas.

Students analyze the structure and elements of informational texts and media, building skills for academic success and understanding the world. Grammar, usage, mechanics, and vocabulary instruction continue to develop their language proficiency.

Through reading strategies, self-monitoring, and reflection on successes and challenges, students become metacognitive learners. Discussion activities are included to actively engage students and foster a sense of community.
