5th Grade Fitness and Health
5th Grade Fitness and Health helps students engage in physical activity while developing the knowledge and skills needed to explore what it means to live a healthy life.
Students learn about the benefits of regular physical activity and the importance of physical fitness. Each day, students participate in 30 minutes of physical activity and practice new fitness skills weekly to improve flexibility, coordination, strength, and aerobic endurance.
Students apply fitness skills through a variety of games and sports, including baseball or softball, basketball, dance, soccer, and tennis.
In health lessons, students explore physical, mental, and social health. Topics include body systems, hygiene, nutrition, managing stress and emotions, safety, and the dangers of caffeine, negative peer influence, legal trouble, and substance abuse, including strategies to avoid harmful substances.
Students also learn about healthy relationships, communication, and conflict resolution, as well as dealing with grief, avoiding gangs, cyberbullying, and practicing kindness and respect.
Students prepare for and take a fitness test that includes sit-and-reach, push-ups, sit-ups, and a mile run. They use a Fitness and Health Notebook to reflect on learning and apply their knowledge and skills.
